“I started sculpting in 2013 because I wanted a bust of my mother. I fell in love with the clay! After years of creating 2-D appear to be 3-D with pencil or paint, here was the chance to actually make 3-D images. And clay is just such a sensually tactile medium! This sculpture of Taz was inspired during a week of sculpting plein air at Zoo Atlanta during their “Art Gone Wild” event, where approximately 40 juried artists create in front of the animal enclosures for the entertainment of zoo guests. Taz is the patriarch of the zoo's Western Lowland gorilla family. I knew I had captured his unique face when Dr. Tara Stoinski, CEO/Pres & Science adviser for the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund and Senior Research Associate for Zoo Atlanta, recognized him!”
