"This Great Egret was wading in water at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Florida. The stark contrast of the soft white feathers against the dark gnarled wood fascinated me. My work is about visual intimacy and results from intense observation: a process of immersion that involves my contemplation and concentration, frustration and exhilaration. I create a series of preliminary sketches from my own photos and used a magnifying glass and a subtle layering of glazes to achieve a realistic meticulously rendered acrylic painting.

I find the painting process both absorbing and soul satisfying and I am happiest when I am at my easel painting. I infuse each brushstroke with my experience of peace and soulfulness while words recede and the awareness of the passage of time fades away. The energetic flow of my lifelong practices of Qigong, Tai Chi and meditation is my distinct personal expression that manifests in my paintings. I am continually pushing the limits of my skill and creativity, by making each painting progressively more detailed. Consequently, my paintings may be mistaken for photographs."
